I believe that my life, and yours, is of great value. While going through a trial recently I began to ponder how gold is purified. I wondered if gold had to withstand increasing heat to become more pure, so I decided to do a quick little bit of Google “research” on these subject.
I learned that one of the more traditional methods of purifying gold involves placing the ore in a crucible and heating it in a furnace until the gold liquifies. When the gold is molten, the dross (or impurities) rise to the surface and are skimmed off. The process is repeated until no more impurities rise for removal. While the articles did not mention increasing the temperature, it did reveal that the gold needs to be heated repeatedly to remove all the dross. The gold is increasingly pure with each encounter with the oven, and not all of the impurities can be removed by a single “trial.” The same is true in our lives. One of my friends made an astute observation: We are all gold at various stages of refinement. I could not agree more, or have put it better myself.
Job 23:10 says But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.
We are all gold, but it is through the heat of the furnace that we are able to “come out” as gold. As painful as the heat of the fire may be, it is through this pain that we come into increasing purity, and are more able to be used for our true purposes. Our trials are of great value because, if we allow a little skimming, they remove all the gunk that is obscuring our sparkle! As you encounter the fires, are you willing to allow your dross to be removed? If you are willing, you will be able to be used for incredibly honourable purposes.
